Issues to Address
The construction industry, while shaping city skylines, is also a high-carbon industry, contributing up to 40% of global greenhouse gas emissions. The United Nations has proposed achieving zero carbon emissions for building materials by 2050, making the construction industry’s carbon reduction efforts an urgent priority. Due to the detailed division of labor and close cooperation within the industry, achieving carbon reduction goals requires collaboration across the sector.
Our Actions
On March 25, 2023, Kedge Construction held its first supplier conference. During the conference, Kedge, together with high-quality upstream and downstream suppliers, participated in the construction industry’s first net-zero initiative, declaring their commitment to sustainable transformation.
- The conference focused on themes such as ‘low-carbon engineering’ and ‘sustainable development of the industry,’ exploring business opportunities in sustainable transformation in construction engineering.
- Kedge presented awards such as ‘Senior Excellent Supplier,’ ‘Senior Outstanding Supplier,’ ‘Senior Leading Supplier,’ and ‘Outstanding Sustainable Partner’ to domestic and international partners, highlighting Kedge’s strong collaboration with suppliers and encouraging them to pursue excellence.
- After the conference, Kedge continued to distribute ESG e-newsletters to share their sustainable practices, such as the comprehensive greenhouse gas inventory completed for all ongoing projects in Taiwan in 2022. This made Kedge a leader in the domestic industry for the most complete carbon inventory operations, helping suppliers understand the truth about carbon emissions and convincing more partners to join the sustainability effort.
Results
- A total of 200 excellent cooperative suppliers participated in the ‘Sustainable Transformation. Moving towards Net Zero’ carbon reduction initiative, with large enterprises like Taiwan Cement, Tung Ho Steel, and Champion Tile joining hands in response.
- The conference shared content on greenhouse gas inventories, labor safety, and public welfare repairs, raising awareness of ESG in the construction industry.
- ESG e-newsletters were sent out quarterly, integrating the company’s sustainable policies and related information to guide suppliers, providing open communication channels for timely feedback.
Future Goals
- The supplier conference is planned to be held every two years, with the next one scheduled for the first quarter of 2025.
- Awards for outstanding suppliers will be given, with assessment criteria including sustainable carbon reduction, ethics, and human rights standards, encouraging suppliers to strive for honor and respond to sustainable actions.
