Issues to Address
Kedge Construction is committed to reducing waste during construction projects, achieving two significant results in 2023. The first achievement is the use of composite waterproofing panels. Since 2022, Kedge Construction, Kindom Construction Corp., and Miniwiz have collaborated on this project. By the first half of 2023, the experimental phase was completed, and the panels were utilized in the Erchongpu project. The carbon footprint comparison estimates that 240 kg of construction site-recycled waste plastic results in a reduction of 240 x 3.14 kg CO2e = 753 kg CO2e. Additionally, 50,000 kg of other recycled plastics results in a reduction of 50,000 x 3.14 kg CO₂e = 157,000 kg CO₂e. In total, this leads to a carbon reduction of 157.8 metric tons of CO₂e.The second achievement is related to the reconstruction of the Nanmen Market. The old Nanmen Market building, which had been in operation for over 30 years, was demolished due to seismic concerns. However, many of the materials from the old building could still be reused. Through innovative design, Kedge Construction has preserved the memory of the old materials in the new construction.
Our Actions
Erzhongpu Project: In 2022, Erzhongpu collected and sorted discarded building materials on-site to prevent contamination at disposal facilities. Starting in 2023, these sorted materials were sent to recycling plants for reuse. After coarse crushing, washing, fine crushing, and pelletizing, recycled plastic pellets were produced. These pellets were then sent to plastic extrusion factories to produce finished products for shipping.
Nanmen Market: The old Nanmen Market building, operational for over 30 years, was demolished due to seismic concerns. However, usable building materials, such as well-preserved aluminum windows from the ground floor exterior walls, were salvaged. These windows were integrated into the design of the ground floor exterior walls, preserving the nostalgia of the past within glass, symbolizing generational continuity.
